So it’s really happening then, the Mustang GTD. Perhaps initially, the idea of a Ford Mustang that was targeting more than 800hp and under seven minutes at the Nurburgring seemed a bit crazy. Brilliantly so, but crazy nonetheless. But now, with the reveal of the Performance Pack at Le Mans - a ‘key component in the quest for a sub-seven-minute lap’ - and a production-ready interior, the GTD is a significant step closer to terrorising track days across the world. We can’t wait.
Performance Packs are familiar from many modern Mustangs, but none is quite like this. This fresh;y upgraded GTD benefits from those huge front aero flics, new underbody flaps, DRS on the rear wing (!) and those stunning magnesium wheels. Some weight is removed via sound deadening deletion as well for the Performance Pack. The carbon seen here is part of a Carbon Series that isn’t mandatory to get the PP, but it feels like a lot of buyers will be ticking both those boxes for a car that looks like this and has the lap-time potential. Speaking of choices, buyers will be offered six standard colours: this Chroma Flame (which is GTD-exclusive), Lightning Blue, Frozen White, Shadow Black, Race Red and Polymimetic Gray. There are stripes offered, too - Nurburgring-ready or not, this is still a Mustang.
Additionally, Ford has chosen the world’s most famous endurance race to show off the GTD interior. It's marked out with a few cool features like suspension adjustment on the carbon-Alcantara wheels and huge titanium paddles for the dual-clutch gearbox. There’s a nose lift button for the very first time in a Mustang.
“Many sports cars excel at one thing. But for a car to set a quick lap at the Nürburgring, it needs to be great at everything. Cornering, grip, braking, acceleration, there’s not a single area where it can’t shine,” said Mustang GTD Chief Engineer Greg Goodall. “From the lightweight carbon fibre body on every GTD to the active aerodynamics of the Performance package, we’ve learned from motorsport how to make the Mustang GTD excel everywhere, all in the quest for a sub-seven-minute lap of the Nürburgring.” As if we weren’t excited enough already. Those in the EU (presumably on a permanent basis, not just this weekend) will be able to apply for a Mustang GTD built slot from tomorrow. The process kicks off at midday here. Don’t be surprised if quite a few other people are also trying.
