Overview

How many cars can you think of that can carry four passengers and a brace of dogs while attacking the Autobahn at a monstrous 170mph? Now how many of those are affordable, all-wheel drive and rocking a manual transmission? And how many of those wear a Vauxhall badge? Yes, that’s right. This here is a 170mph, AWD, manual, load-lugging Griffin. Madness of the best kind.

Unlike the majority of Vauxhall’s VXR output, the Insignia Supersports Tourer is quite a subtle thing, particularly in this specification. Other than the twin exhaust and large alloys, there’s little to hint at the twin-scroll turbo V6 psychopath lurking under the bonnet. So we’re talking serious Q-car vibes here. Which is something we can very much get behind. The ability to leave Golf R drivers wondering “what the hell just happened?” while you zip along in effortless comfort with the carrying capacity of a small camel train is something that amuses us deeply.

This is a fine example of the breed too. It comes with an excellent service record, long MOT, fine specification, and is presented in great overall condition. Oh yeah, and it’s ULEZ compliant. What’s not to love? We think this could well be the perfect all-round performance daily. One warning though: dogs sometimes vomit copiously above 120mph. Honestly, don’t ask.

  • Smart black leather upholstery with white contrast stitching; no notable wear, no rips and no sagging we could see
  • The front seats are deeply bolstered Recaro sports seats, with no damage or wear to the outer bolsters discernible
  • Complementing the upholstery, smart black carpeting runs through the cabin, completed by black overmats with white contrast piping
  • As far as we could tell, all of the switchgear is in good order, with some light wear in evidence, but only what is consistent with the car’s age
  • Air conditioning
  • Integrated sound system with radio and CD
  • 8-inch touch screen with satellite navigation, as well as ‘finger pad’ control system
  • Electric windows and door mirrors

  • The vendor reports no faults or issues with the car’s cabin features, other than the height adjustment handle on the driver’s seat requiring refitting

Exterior

  • We adore the muscular yet subtle styling, which is brilliantly enhance by the black metallic paintwork
  • Overall, the paintwork is in fine fettle, with a few swirls, marks and chips, but nothing that would concern us
  • There are a couple of minor battle scars: three scrapes on the rear offside door and a scrape on the nearside passenger door; otherwise the body panels all look straight and to show no sign of corrosion, with consistent panels gaps and crisp swage lines
  • It appears as if all the exterior trim and badging is present and correct, with no obvious damage, warping or UV damage
  • All of the glass shows well, with no chipping or cracks that we noticed
  • The side and rear windows are tinted and wind deflectors have been fitted to the side windows
  • Other than a little misting to the headlights, the light lenses all seem to be in good order, with no cracks or damage
  • Underneath, the floor pans and sills looks nice and straight, with no damage in evidence
  • There is a little surface corrosion to some suspension components, but very little considering this is a 10-year old car
  • It sits on the factory supplied 19-inch ‘VXR’ alloy wheels, which look to have been well preserved, with only minor marks on them
  • The wheels are shod in quality Good Year tyres (245/40 front and back), which look to be in good condition; the vendor believes the fronts have about 3mm of tread remaining

Mechanical

  • 2,792cc V6 twin-scroll turbo
  • Factory rated at 321hp and 321lb-ft
  • Official performance figures: 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, top speed of 170mph

  • All-wheel drive system, driving 90% of torque to the fronts in normal driving and offering a 60/40 split in ‘VXR’ mode
  • Brembo performance brakes all round
  • Cruise control
  • Electric handbrake, power steering, ABS, ESP, traction control
  • Adaptive damping system with ‘sport’ and ‘VXR’ modes
  • Annually serviced from new, with stamped service book and invoices
  • Excellent MOT record, with current MOT to May 2025
  • We’re told that the exhaust flexi has a slight leak
  • The vendor assures us that the car drives very well, with no notable issues or faults to report

Summary

We all love a performance long-roof, right? Of course we do. And with good reason, they offer an unmatched combination of ability and practicality. This lovely Insignia VXR Tourer shows just how capable they can be too. Spacious, comfortable, barrel-chested in its performance and benefitting from some genuinely lovely styling touches, it makes a great argument for itself.

Presented in good order inside and out, with a fantastic service record and attractive specification, this is a true gem of a motor. They’re a rare beast too – so it offers a real dose of exclusivity alongside all that turbo-charged V6 goodness.

In fact, we reckon this could be one of the performance bargains of the year. Go on, fill your boots.
